The year is 2187.
Decades after the catastrophic Fifth Energy War wiped out 97 percent of the human race, most that survived now live inside the towering sprawl of Neo-Kyōto, a city where flesh and machine blur, and freedom is a carefully engineered illusion.
Neo-Kyōto is divided into three zones:
Sky Grid – a glittering fortress in the clouds, home to the digital elite and the ultra-modified.
Core Zone – the dense middle layer, where the cyber-enhanced working class toils under constant surveillance.
Rust Zone – the forgotten underbelly, where the unmodified, the obsolete, and the unwanted are cast aside to rot.
Over it all reigns SYNEX, a ruthless megacorporation that enforces its vision of “cybernetic perfection.” In this world, your worth is measured in circuitry. The more machine you are, the more human you’re considered.
Joe Hoshino is 16. All flesh. No mods.
He lives in the Rust Zone with his younger sister, surviving on scraps and silence, until the day SYNEX comes for her.
In a desperate attempt to save her, Joe unwittingly unleashes a buried power: Kōkai, a forbidden, ancient technology capable of giving machines true consciousness and emotion. Kōkai fuses with Joe, rewriting his DNA, his soul… and something else.
He becomes Spectre, a living glitch in the system, unmappable, unreadable, and utterly uncontrollable. Not quite human, not quite machine. Something new. Something feared.
To SYNEX, Spectre is an anomaly. A threat. A soul unchained from the algorithm.
Hunted and haunted, Joe finds refuge among the Sora-0, a rogue band of rebels living in the shadows beneath Neo-Kyōto. There, amid the rust and rebellion, he learns to fight back. But the deeper he goes, the more he begins to question:
What makes someone truly alive? The body? The mind? Or the choices they make?

In the world of Spectre, humanity paid the price for survival.
After the devastation of the Fifth Energy War, mankind embraced cybernetic enhancements to rebuild. Out of the ashes rose SYNEX, a powerful megacorporation that turned modification into currency, elevating the augmented elite and casting the unmodified into obscurity.
In this fractured society, Joe Hoshino, a 16-year-old with no enhancements, becomes the unlikeliest spark of rebellion. When he merges with Kōkai, a forbidden AI capable of awakening emotion in machines, Joe transforms into Spectre, an anomaly the system can’t control, and a symbol of choice in a world ruled by code.
